Bathroom Remodel Timeline: How Long Does It Take?
EXCELLENT Based on 24 reviews Posted on Google Margaret HellstromTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Juan and his team did a fantastic job on our upstairs bathroom, we genuinely couldn’t be happier with how it turned out! The experience of working with them was smooth from start to finish. We particularly appreciated the proactive communication, attention to detail, and impressive quality of the tile work. Juan did great job coordinating everything so it got done on time and in budget, and he was a thoughtful partner in solving some unforeseen issues with the space. I could tell the whole team genuinely cared about doing high-quality work. This experience was honestly a breath of fresh air compared to most of our other experiences with contractors during our remodel. I highly recommend Juan and Keen Improvements!Posted on Google Mike MTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I don’t even know where to start. From the moment we met Juan he put us at ease. He was knowledgeable, professional, and respectful every step of the way. He helped us make decisions, took into consideration our budget and vision and was flexible and responsive. We interviewed three other companies before signing on with Keen and it was worth every penny. If you are considering getting anything done, this is the company stop looking right now. You won’t find anyone better or more honest.. The crew left our home cleaner than we ever expected after remodeling two bathrooms. They were careful with our belongings and the hardest workers we have ever had the pleasure of working with. I cannot say enough good things about this company and specifically Juan. We will absolutely only be dealing with them going forward with projects in our home.Posted on Google Carol PauliTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Keen Improvements brought in a team of terrific professionals who transformed our awkward bathtub nook into a bright, spacious walk-in shower. This required men who took out our old tub and walls and then carpenters, a plumber, and a tiling team. Every one of them was smart, skilled, helpful, and efficient. Each one cleaned up at day's end. Juan Suarez oversaw it all, advising us, noting our preferences, keeping the whole project on schedule--and adding his happy, uplifting personality to our home.Posted on Google Lynn GerardTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Juan Suarez recently met with my husband and me to discuss plans to install a new, fully tiled walk-in shower where our garden jet tub / fiberglass shower enclosure were to be soon demolished. From our initial consultation to our final inspection meeting, Juan was always prompt, professional and courteous to deal with. He followed the schedule of work exactly as had been agreed upon earlier, and his Project Manager, Miguel, was exactly the same way - prompt, professional and pleasant. Most importantly, the crew that Juan brought into our home to complete the project were all tidy and professional individuals. Additionally, they were all very skilled in their various areas of expertise. We love our beautiful new shower and will be hiring Keen Improvements again in the near future for some additional home improvement projects! (Photos Note- depending on the lighting, the wall tile can look like a true medium grey color, or a “greige”.- I love this tile)Posted on Google jen purcellTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Juan is an absolute pleasure to work with! His crew did a fantastic job restoring my wood floors very professionally and efficiently. Great job!Posted on Google Jonathan GrimmTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We’ve hired Keen Improvements many times over the years for various projects (both big and small) related to the restoration of our house, which is well over 100 years old. Juan and his team are hands down the best general contractors we’ve encountered, and that’s why we’ve continued to hire them for projects that have included the restoration of wood floors, tiling work, door + door frame replacement, wall restoration, and paint work (to name just a few). No matter what the job entails you’re getting unparalleled craftsmanship and top notch professionalism from start to finish. I can’t recommend these talented folks enough.Posted on Google Jaime McClintockTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Juan and his team did a full remodel of a en suite bathroom. This was taken down to the studs and rebuilt. Juan gave an accurate timeline, an up front estimate that he stuck to, and helped me to make sure I had the necessary supplies at each step of the process. The whole team was pleasant and professional, including his contractors, a pleasure to have in our home while we were also working from home. The finished product is exactly what we planned on, and I believe that Keen Improvements will stand by their work if any issues were to arise. I am very happy with the work that was done, I have already recommended them to friends and and plan to contact them again for future jobs in our home.Posted on Google Kevin NyeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Juan, Mariana, and team are really great. We hired them to redo our bathroom and they were so quick, so communicative and the work they do is top notch. We can not recommend them enough! We were so impressed with their work that we hired them again to help with some small kitchen projects and will most assuredly hire them again when the time comes.Posted on Google Nick MaraldoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My Family and I decided to go with your company because Mr. Suarez took the time to find out what we wanted. We found him to be very knowledgable and patient. He explained our options and made some very good suggestions. Keen Improvements has met our expectations. Your workers were always on time and worked cleanly and efficiently. We love our bathrooms and the additional work we had you do came out nicely. Mr. Suarez has been a pleasure to work with and will get my patronage again when the need arises. I highly recommend you. Thank you.Posted on Google Bruce OwenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We were fortunate enough to meet Juan after being taken advantage of by a fraudulent contractor. Juan, Matt and Miguel couldn’t have nicer. They helped us with all aspects of the project. It was a pleasure dealing with an honest and talented group of professionals. We look forward to working with Juan and his crew for all our future projects. Juan, thank you for our beautiful bathroom. You are truly the best.

If you are planning a bathroom remodel, one question tends to come first. How long will you be living without your bathroom? It is a fair thing to worry about. A bathroom is one of the most used rooms in the house, and a project that drags on affects your whole routine.
The honest answer is that most bathroom remodels take somewhere between three and ten weeks, and the range is wide for a reason. It is just that scope drives everything. A straight swap of fixtures moves fast. A full renovation with a new layout, new tile, and moved plumbing takes much longer.
At Keen Improvements, we remodel bathrooms across the Hudson Valley, from Mt. Kisco and the surrounding Westchester and Putnam towns up through Ulster, Dutchess, and Orange counties. This guide walks through the real timeline, phase by phase, so you know what to expect before the first tile comes off the wall.
If you want the bigger picture on how to plan the whole project, read our companion guide, Planning a Bathroom Remodel in Hudson Valley. This post stays focused on the clock.
How Long Does a Bathroom Remodel Take? The Short Answer
Most bathroom remodels run three to ten weeks from the start of construction to the final walk-through. Smaller, simpler jobs land at the low end. Larger, custom renovations land at the top, and some run longer.
Two numbers matter here, and people often confuse them.
The first is construction time. That is the stretch when crews are in your home doing the work. For a typical bathroom, active construction is often two to four weeks.
The second is total project time. That includes the weeks before anyone shows up, when you finalize the design, pick your finishes, wait on permits, and order materials. Total project time from your first conversation to a finished bathroom is often two to three months.
The gap between those two numbers is where most surprises hide. Materials that take weeks to arrive, or a permit that sits in review, will stretch the calendar even when the actual construction is quick.
Bathroom Remodel Timeline by Project Type
Not every bathroom project runs the same schedule.
Here is a general breakdown by the kind of work involved. These are typical industry ranges, not fixed quotes. Your project will depend on your space, your finishes, and what we find once the walls are open.
Small bathroom remodel. A powder room or a compact full bath with a like-for-like fixture swap and fresh finishes often runs one to three weeks of construction. Keeping the existing layout is what keeps this fast.
Walk-in shower remodel. Swapping a dated shower for a new walk-in shower usually runs two to three weeks. Waterproofing and tile are the time-heavy steps, and they should not be rushed.
Tub-to-shower conversion. A tub-to-shower conversion often lands in a similar two to three week window. If the drain has to move from a tub position to a shower position, plan for a little more time and an added plumbing step.
Full bathroom renovation. A complete renovation with a new layout, moved plumbing, new tile throughout, and custom finishes typically runs four to eight weeks of construction, sometimes longer for high-end work.
The Bathroom Remodel Process, Week by Week
The bathroom remodel process follows a predictable order. Each phase has to finish before the next can start, which is why the sequence sets your remodel schedule.
Planning and Design
Before any demolition, we lock down the design. That means the layout, the fixtures, the tile, the vanity, and every finish. A complete plan is what lets us build an accurate schedule and order the right materials on time. Rushing this step is the most common cause of delays later.
Demolition
The demolition takes less time. For most bathrooms, tearing out the old finishes and fixtures takes about a day. The crew protects the path from the door to the bathroom first, so dust and debris stay contained.
Rough-In
With the space stripped to the studs, the plumbers and electricians get the water lines, drains, and wiring where they need to go. This phase usually takes one to three days. It is the right moment to catch anything hidden behind the walls, which matters a lot in older homes.
Inspection
If your project needs a permit, an inspector checks the rough-in work before the walls close up. The inspection itself is usually quick, but scheduling the appointment can vary. In some Hudson Valley towns, you can get an appointment quickly but in busier building departments, it may take longer.
Waterproofing and Shower Pan
Before any tile is installed, the shower must be properly waterproofed. The shower pan gets set and, in many cases, tested to confirm it holds water and drains correctly. This step protects the whole job. If your contractor takes extra time to get the waterproofing right, that's a good sign. Care and attention at this stage help ensure your new shower performs reliably for years to come.
Tile
Tile is often the longest single phase. Depending on how much tile is in the design and how small the pieces are, it can run anywhere from a couple of days to a full week or more. Small mosaic tile in a custom shower takes far longer than large-format floor tile. Grout and tile adhesive need time to dry, so you can't speed up this step.
Fixtures, Vanity, and Finishes
Now the bathroom starts looking like a bathroom again. Plumbers install the faucets, shower heads, sink, and toilet. Electricians add switches and light fixtures. The vanity goes in, followed by trim, paint, and hardware. This step usually takes a few days.
Punch List and Walk-Through
At the end, we walk to the finished bathroom with you. You point out anything that needs a touch-up, and we handle the punch list. Minor items get fixed quickly. A backordered part is the one thing that can extend this final step.
What Slows a Bathroom Remodel Down?
Most delays happen for a few common reasons. Knowing about them early can help you avoid delays and keep your project on schedule. Such issues may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Permits and inspections
This is the biggest variable outside the actual work. Permit review time changes from town to town across the Hudson Valley. Smaller towns can turn a permit around in a couple of weeks, and busier building departments take longer. A permit is usually needed when a project moves plumbing fixtures, adds electrical circuits, or changes walls. Purely cosmetic updates often do not need one, though the rules vary by municipality. We handle permit coordination as part of the job and build the local approval schedule into your timeline.
Material lead times
Some items ship in days. Others, like a custom vanity or a specialty tile, can take weeks. Ordering early, right after the design is set, keeps a slow-arriving product from holding up the whole remodel.
Change orders
Deciding to move a wall or change finishes after demolition has begun can disrupt the construction schedule. Finalizing as many decisions as possible before construction starts helps keep the project on track and minimizes delays.
Hidden conditions in older homes
Hidden conditions matter more in the Hudson Valley than in most places because of the region’s older housing stock.
Bathroom Remodel Timeline in the Hudson Valley
The Hudson Valley has its own set of factors that affect how long a bathroom remodel takes. A national how-to guide will not mention any of them.
Start with the housing stock. The region is full of older homes, including farmhouses from the late 1800s, Victorian colonials, and a large share of mid-century ranches and Capes built between 1950 and 1990. That age shows up the moment the walls come open.
It is not unusual to find galvanized plumbing, old wiring running close to pipes, or water damage that has been spreading quietly for years. None of that is a reason to panic. It is a reason to plan. When we open a wall and find something unexpected, we flag it, show you the options, and let you decide. That conversation can add a few days, and it is far better to have it than to tile over a problem.
Older homes settle, too. A wall that looks straight might be off by a fraction over its length. That changes how tile gets laid and how a vanity gets installed, and a good crew plans for it rather than fighting it.
In the more rural parts of Ulster, Dutchess, and Orange counties, many homes rely on septic and well systems. If a remodel touches drainage and the septic system is decades old, that is worth factoring into the plan early.
Then there is the calendar. Timing your project to the season can make scheduling easier. Bathroom work happens indoors, so it can move along fine during the colder months. That is also when contractor schedules tend to open up and local permit approvals can come through faster.
Spring is the busy season here. Schedules book out further and permit offices get busier, so a spring start means having the conversation in the winter, not in April. Winter remodels work well, with one caveat worth knowing. Tile adhesives and grout need to cure within a temperature range, so if your work zone runs cold overnight, that is something the crew plans around.
How to Keep Your Bathroom Remodel on Schedule?
A few habits keep a project moving.
Finalize your finishes before demolition begins. Making these decisions early prevents last-minute changes that can slow the schedule and create unnecessary pauses during construction.
Order materials early. Your design plan should be finalized before placing orders, so even the longest-lead items arrive when they are needed for installation.
Work with a contractor who manages the entire project. Keeping plumbing, electrical, tile, and finish work coordinated under one schedule helps prevent the gaps, delays, and handoffs that can extend the timeline.
